The DPIIT-IPR Chair of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam on May 18, 2023 conducted a Muga Silk GI Authorised User Registration Camp at Sualkuchi in collaboration with Rural and Tribal Development Foundation (NGO), Sualkuchi. Mr. Pranjal Baishya, Field Assistant, DPIIT-IPR Chair, NLUJA, Assam facilitated the Muga Silk GI Authorised User registrations of fourteen (14) Muga Silk producers/weavers therein.
DPIIT-IPR Chair
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, vide office order dated 16th of October 2018 has endowed the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam with an Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Chair, under the Scheme for Pedagogy & Research in IPRs for Holistic Education & Academia (SPRIHA), to benefit the people of the North-East Region of India in protecting their IPRs. The Chair since its inception in 2018 has concertedly focused its efforts towards conservation and dissemination of IP resources of the North-East Region and has been fervently engaged in capacity building of the creators/producers/owners towards safeguarding their IP rights at the grass-root and also viably commercialize their products, in order to strengthen the nation’s overall IP eco-system.
Mandate of the Chair
In terms of the SPRIHA Scheme the DPIIT-IPR Chair since its inception, is engaged in providing an environment nurturing academic and facilitative undertakings for the overall development and sensitization of IPR in the North-East Region. Therefore, the mandate of the Chair involves:
- Introduction and dissemination of IPR education and research;
- Sensitizing and training the various stakeholders of IPR, like faculty members, students, lawyers, artisans, craftsmen, producers/creators of knowledge-based products, farmers etc.;
- Conducting studies on IP with special focus on the North-East Region;
- Facilitation of IP filings from the region;
- Generating IP awareness among the masses;
- Dissemination of IPR knowledge and promotion of discussion on IPR;
- Creation of an IPR knowledge database so as to be able to provide inputs/recommendations on IPR issues for policy-makers.
NLUJA, Assam has world-class research and academic facility in terms of knowledge-resources and the IPR Chair of the University has an IPR Facilitation Centre which provides free-of-cost consultation and facilitation on IPR matters. The DPIIT-IPR Chair of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam in collaboration with Advancing North-East Initiative under North Eastern Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (NEDFi) on the occasion of World IP Day, 2023 (26th of April, 2023) organised a ‘One-Day Camp on Free Facilitation of IPR Registrations and Awareness’ at NEDFi Convention Centre, NEDFi House, Guwahati. The programme was in hybrid mode consisting of both offline and online participation.
A Muga Silk GI Registration Facilitation Drive was organised by the DPIIT-IPR Chair, National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam on the occasion of World IP Day (April 26, 2023) at Sualkuchi. Mr. Pranjal Baishya, Field Assistant, DPIIT-IPR Chair, NLUJA, Assam visited several Muga Silk weaving centres as well as local weavers at Sualkuchi and interacted with them.
The DPIIT-IPR Chair, NLUJA, Assam conducted an Outreach Programme on Geographical Indication (GI), Indigenous Resources and Associated Traditional Knowledge (TK) of Arunachal Pradesh on 28th of March, 2023 at Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh in collaboration with State Institute for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (SIRD&PR), Arunachal Pradesh.
The DPIIT-IPR Chair and Centre for Research on Intellectual Property Rights (CERIP) of National Law University and Judicial Academy (NLUJA), Assam organised an Educational Tour cum Awareness Programme on Geographical Indication (GI), Traditional Knowledge(TK) and other Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) on March 22nd 2023 at Sualkuchi in collaboration with Rural and Tribal Development Foundation (NGO), Sualkuchi and Mazbat College, Udalguri BTR Assam.
The DPIIT- IPR Chair, the Centre for Research on Intellectual Property Rights (CeRIP) and the IQAC of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam organised an online Knowledge Series on ‘Emerging Intellectual Property Rights Issues’. The series has been conducted in four parts comprising of the 1st session on ‘IP Protection for Emerging Technologies (AI, Blockchain, Metaverse, NFT etc.)’ held on 15th of March, 2023, 2nd session on ‘Emerging Entrepreneurial Landscape in the context of North-East: Opportunities and Challenges’ held on 16th of March, 2023, 3rd session on ‘Ideation to Commercialization of Research Products & TRL Impact on Startups’ held on 17th of March, 2023 and the 4th session on ‘Concept of Geographical Indications and Prospects in Assam’ on 21st of March, 2023.
