A noted academician and scientist, Professor Buragohain holds a Ph.D. degree in Plant Molecular Biology from the Imperial College of Science Technology and Medicine, London. His research interests are in the areas of medicinal plants and evolutionary genomics.

Professor Buragohain has extensive experience in higher education having served in several leadership positions in academic institutions of the region. He was the founder Head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Tezpur University, a central University in Assam. He also established the Centre for Petroleum Biotechnology in the University.

Professor Buragohain was the Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University, the second oldest state university of northeast India. He also served as the Registrar of Tezpur University. Professor Buragohain is deeply immersed in Humanities and Social Sciences.
