Centre for Gender Justice
National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) Centre for Gender Justice was established in the month of December, 2017 in order to facilitate academic and action-oriented programme towards promotion of gender equality. Gender equality is everyone’s responsibility and the Centre is committed to create the space for academic discourse on the varied perspectives of gender justice and also endeavours to administer programmes directed towards addressing the challenges and concerns of gender equality. The first programme of the Centre for Gender Justice was organized on March 8, 2018, i.e., International Women’s Day , wherein twenty (20) female staff members of housekeeping and security services and five (05) women employed at NLUJAA canteens were felicitated for the service they render to the university. It was a momentous occasion where the subaltern women were duly honoured for their service and were given a forum to express their joys, travails and aspirations.
Events
Dr. Kasturi Gakul, Academic Co-ordinator, Centre for Gender Justice, NLUJA, Assam organized a thought-provoking movie screening for fifth year students, featuring a selection of impactful films aimed at raising awareness about critical social issues. The event showcased “Beauty of Life”, an award-winning acclaimed documentary that delves into the lives of acid attack survivors, highlighting their resilience and courage. Additionally, the screening included “Komal” a short film by CHILDLINE 1098 that addresses the sensitive topic of child sexual abuse and provides crucial information on reporting and prevention. This initiative aimed to foster empathy, educate students on pressing gender-related issues, and inspire them to contribute to social justice.
Centre for Gender Justice, NLUJA, Assam organised skits on different areas of labour law which formed an integral part of generating awareness about gender equality. The topics for skit presentation were based on VI Semester CBCS paper 603- Labour and Industrial Law -II and included the themes relating to child labour, bonded labour, inter-state migrant workers, contract labour and employee’s right to compensation. The skit was performed by the B.A. LL.B. (Hons) FYIC students of Third year, Sixth Semester under the guidance of Dr Kasturi Gakul in the Circle of Life, Ground Floor, Academic Block, NLUJA, Assam.

Programme on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was organised by the Centre for Gender Justice and IQAC, NLUJA, Assam on 25th November 2022 from 11:00 am in the Seminar Hall, 2nd Floor, Administrative Block, NLUJA, Assam. Prof Kalpana Sarathy, Deputy Director, TISS, Guwahati had delivered a special lecture on ‘Gender-based violence and impact on mental health of women’. Patron of the Centre Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Prof V.K. Ahuja, NLUJA, Assam had emphasized upon generating awareness among all for eliminating violence against women and had also interacted with the students. Dr Indranoshee Das, Registrar, NLUJA, Assam had also graced the occasion and encouraged students to work towards eliminating gender-based violence. A documentary titled ‘From Fear to Freedom’ was screened. Poster making and slogan writing competition was also organised. The programme was attended by First, Second and Third Year B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) FYIC students of the University. Student volunteers of the Centre Ms Sneha, Mr Prince, Ms Nandini, Mr Ayush and Mr Priyanshu had actively participated in the programme. Mr Satyajit Deb, System Operator, had provided the IT support.
Dr Gitanjali Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Law, NLUJA, Assam in collaboration with Centre for Gender Justice and IQAC, National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam and Hidayatullah National Law University, Raipur organized a special lecture in blended mode on the topic “Succession and Matrimonial Property Laws of Goa” on 18.11.2022 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. The esteemed resource person was Dr. Albertina Almeida, Advocate, Goa and Member, Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development.
Gender Sensitization Programme was organized by the Centre for Gender Justice, NLUJA, Assam on 14th September (Wednesday), 2022 at 4:00 pm in the Seminar Hall, 2nd Floor, Administrative Block, NLUJA, Assam. The programme was attended by the First year B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) FYIC students of the University. Questionnaires were distributed at the beginning of the programme and responses of the participants were analysed and discussed at the end. Issues relating to gender and sex, gender equality, anti-ragging laws and protection against sexual harassment was discussed by the Centre Student Volunteers along with Academic Co-ordinator. A short film ‘Juice’ by Neeraj Ghaywan was also screened.

Orientation Programme on Gender Sensitization was organized by the Centre for Gender Justice on the 7th June, 2022 at 4.00 p.m. in the Seminar Hall, 2nd Floor, Administrative Block, NLUJA, Assam. The students of first year (Second Semester) of the B.A.,LL.B.(Hons.) FYIC course had attended the programme. The Session was conducted by Dr. Kasturi Gakul, Academic Co-ordinator, Centre for Gender Justice. There was also screening of Tahneek Rahman’s award winning short film ‘Different’.
