the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam, in collaboration with its Pro Bono Club under the auspices of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India, organized a Legal Awareness and Legal Aid Programme. The event, conducted by a team of Nyaya Bandhus (Pro Bono volunteers) under the abled guidance of Prof. Dr. Diptimoni Boruah, aimed to foster legal awareness and provide insights into the legal aid avenues available to the community.
PRO BONO LEGAL SERVICES CLUB, NLUJA
The Pro Bono Legal Services Club was established at the National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) on May 2022. It aims at providing pro bono legal services for the needy and backward people in the society, under the auspices of the Department of Justice, Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India. It seeks to bring forth as volunteers the young legal minds of the nation, who enrolled in undergraduate law school courses across the country. The scheme aims to inculcate the values of social work and volunteership among the law students, and at the same time, provide accessible knowledge of the legal domain to the masses, especially those from marginalized backgrounds.
Events
The Pro-bono club of National Law University And Judicial Academy Assam organised a visit to Amingaon lok-adalat for its members on 9th September 2023. A contingent of 11 volunteers from the club visited the lok-adalat organised in Amingaon district court complex and observed the proceedings of the same, also assisting the parties and court in the proceedings.
The Pro Bono Legal Services Club organized Nukkad Natak at Sualkuchi, Singimari and Amingaon Daily Market, Hajo Chowk.
The Pro Bono Legal Services Club organized Legal Literacy & Legal Awareness Programme at adopted Baka Village, North Guwahati.
The Pro Bono Legal Services Club organized the Legal Awareness and Legal Aid Programme in Gauhati Central Jail, at Lokhra. The students were divided in various groups and differently address various group of persons locked in jail, suggested them about the facilities and procedures of free legal aid services.
The Pro Bono Club and CCLELAC organised a legal literacy programme at the University campus to promote legal literacy and spread awareness about legal aid services available at the Legal Aid Clinic, NLUJAA and Legal Aid Centres in courts.
The Pro Bono Club and CCLELAC organised a programme at the Gaon Panchayat to increase legal literacy and make it easier for the general public to have access to justice.
The Pro Bono Legal Services Club conducted legal awareness campaigns from 6 February 2023 to 8 February 2023 in various colleges of Assam under the guidance of Dr. Diptimoni Boruah, Associate Prof. of Law, and NLUJAA along with seven students of the University. The campaign aimed at proliferating the ideas and application of law for the younger generation to understand the importance of the same in the present era. The awareness drive gave insights to the students across various colleges on the significance of legal recourse when anything wrong has been or had happened with them or anyone around them.
To commemorate the occasion of International Human Rights Day, the Pro Bono Legal Service Club (PBLSC) of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA), in collaboration with Centre for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, NLUJAA, organized a Special Virtual Lecture on Human Rights on 10 December, 2022 with the esteemed resource person Hon’ble Mr. Justice U.U. Lalit, former Chief Justice of India.
